An early faience desk stand that features a covered ink well, four holes for quills to be stored, and a rare pounce pot, all decorated in a tin glaze. Yellow flowers with green foliage are hand painted on the sides, top. The bottom is left unglazed. The desk stand measures 6 5/8" long by 2 3/4" wide, and stands 2 7/8" high without the inkwell cover. Including the finial, the height would b e 4 1/8 inches.
Truly an antique of substantial value, this French desk stand was created in the mid to late 1700's.
Generally no larger than a clenched fist, the pounce pot or sander's perforated tops allowed fine powders to be gently shaken over a writing surface. Employed around the late 18th century, this item utilized the pounce dispersed from the pounce pot/sander to lightly sprinkle the fine powder over freshly scripted text.
